Distance and time on the sled are not the same
Ten kilometres do not mean the same time on the sled everywhere. The Rovaniemi Insider ride covers 10 km in 25–35 minutes; the A Day In Lapland safari lists 6–10 km and 30–50 minutes; the self-driving tour of the Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park lists 7–10 km and about an hour. Stops, driver swaps, the terrain and the snow all change the pace. Compare both numbers where the listing gives them, and remember that on a shared sled your own time on the runners is a part of it.
◈
The advertised distance can be shortened.
Several reviewers report that the route they rode was much shorter than the listing: one on a 5–8 km tour recorded 3.3 km, another on a 10 km ride says they only did 3 km after being warned the day before that it could be shortened. A further reviewer describes constant stops because the temperature was too high and the snow too soft. Where reviewers give a reason, it is mild weather and soft snow. Treat the distance as the plan for good conditions, read the operator’s terms on the product page, and ask at the start which route you will run.
How much of the day is the ride?
The longer safaris take place at kennels outside town, and the half-day formats list around four hours in total. One reviewer describes a drive of about 45 minutes to an hour out to the farm; another writes that 2.5 hours of a 4-hour excursion were spent on transportation. That is no reason to skip a safari. It is the reason to compare the stated time on the sled rather than the total duration. Among the tours that state both, the self-driving tour of the Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park has the highest share of riding: about an hour on the sled within 2 hours in total.
Driving the whole way?
Usually not. On the Rovaniemi Insider ride drivers swap along the way, and at the Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park one person drives with up to two passengers. The safari to a reindeer farm with North Tours is a route with a destination: 5 km out, a stop with soup at the farm and 2 km back. On the listing with 1 to 20 km, the option you select decides both the distance and whether you drive. According to the listing, the 10 and 20 km options are self-driven.
Timing and punctuality
Pick-up and start times are set per tour. One reviewer of a morning ride reports a start an hour later than booked; other operators are strict the other way round and do not refund late arrivals. Leave a buffer on both sides, especially if you have an evening activity planned after the safari.
Not sure whether you need the long version? The short ride vs. safari page puts every tour on one distance scale, from the farm visit to the 10 km safaris.
