What a cart ride is
A husky cart is a wheeled frame that the team pulls along forest tracks, the autumn counterpart to a sled. On the Arctic GM autumn tour you drive your own team over 5–8 km; on the Beyond Arctic tour you ride 3 km as a passenger, which makes it the family option; Bearhill’s autumn format covers 4 km in a group of at most eight, so check on the product page who drives.
When the autumn season runs
The cart tours run in autumn, roughly from October until the snow arrives. Sled rides usually start from mid or late November, but the exact dates depend on the operator and on the snow in a given year. If you travel in the weeks where the two seasons meet, check the product page for your date: it tells you whether a cart or a sled is running. More on the season on our best-time page.
Which autumn tour to pick
- To drive the team yourself: the Arctic GM autumn tour, 5–8 km on the cart. Its winter version is on our Arctic GM page.
- With children or as a first try: the Beyond Arctic cart ride, 3 km as a passenger, about 2 hours in total.
- In a small group: Bearhill’s autumn cart tour, 4 km with at most eight guests. More about the operator on our Bearhill page.
What to wear in autumn
Autumn in Lapland can be wet, muddy and cold at the same time. Waterproof outer layers and sturdy, waterproof shoes matter more now than thick down; add a warm mid layer, a hat and gloves for the ride itself. Check on the product page what the operator provides. The what-to-wear page covers the winter version.
Autumn is also the start of the northern lights season, when nights are dark again and lakes are not yet frozen. Autumn aurora tours are compared on our sister site rovaniemi-northernlights.com.
